SUSTAINABILITY GOALS FOR URBAN WATER AND SOLID WASTE SYSTEMS
Sustainability has three interacting dimensions: environmental, economic, and societal, and sustainability can be achieved only when these components are balanced. If they are not balanced, the outcomes can be numerous, such as pollution and environmental degradation but also social injustice or unsustainable development. In the first two decades of the twentieth century, the initiatives of communities toward sustainability have been local. There is even a contest among city mayors for a title of most sustainable city. Some “green” organizations and magazines provide sustainability city ranking, based on the portion of renewable energy used by the population, minimization of emissions from transportation, green living (parks, urban agriculture), recycling of solid waste, and other sustainability parameters. In 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing the sustainability goals for 2030, which made a commitment to minimize the impact of cities on the global climate system.
