GOALS AND CRITERIA OF URBAN SUSTAINABILITY
To measure suitability progress and impact toward sustainability, the society and planners need measures of urban metabolism and sustainability criteria. A “footprint” is a quantitative measure of urban metabolisms showing the appropriation of natural resources by human beings. Footprints can be local or regional or global. Footprints related to urban metabolism have been identified in the literature: the water footprint; the carbon footprint; and the ecological footprint. Large‐scale (regional, global) footprints focus on sustainability of fresh water availability, energy and greenhouse emissions, and ecology. The criteria can also be local, such as the widely accepted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating restricted to buildings, individual developments, or neighborhoods. Some “cities of the future” installed an underground vacuum system delivering sorted solid waste from buildings to district processing and to the energy and resource recovery centers.
