A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Timber‐frame greenhouses are usually more complex than light‐frame ones, because they usually derive from a combination of timber‐frame orders and light‐frame orders. Timber frames and light frames are almost unavoidably intermixed in timber‐frame greenhouses, unless the greenhouses are enclosed with transparent film and the films are installed with no secondary structure. Modern timber‐frame connections constitute a substantial evolution from traditional ones. Today, the timber pole construction technique has a small “market share” due to drawbacks deriving from its core feature: each pole constitutes its own foundation. The most common pole construction type is that of many North American barns, but the technique can also be used for greenhouses. Several solutions that can be used for bracing light frames are less suitable for timber frames. Among them, there is bracing the structural bays with plywood panels.
