River Thames, England – Strategies and Technique
The River Thames flows through Southern England and supplies most of Greater London's drinking water. However, surface runoff and storm sewer overflows determine its poor water quality and its degraded habitat quality. London's five major sewage treatment works have been extended to improve the river's quality standards, but the sewage system still needs to be modernised. The Thames Gateway, defined as the largest brownfield land regeneration programme in Europe, seeks to turn the Thames Estuary into an international model and UK's first eco‐region. According to recent planning proposals, an overall project will provide a network of accessible and sustainable landscapes, enhancing environmental restoration, natural drainage and flood resilience.
