Corrosion Protection Properties of Portland Cement Concrete
This article reports on a cooperative study by members of the American Concrete Pressure Pipe Association (ACPPA). The objectives of the 4‐year study were to: explain why portland cement concrete protects embedded steel from corrosion; determine what conditions lessen this protection; and, to discover ways to preserve the protective effect. The application of cathodic protection to steel pipelines is often unreasonably intense and presents a potential hazard to neighboring pipelines and other underground structures. Therefore, a proposal was made to determine the effect on steel in concrete of both accumulating current (cathodic protection) and discharging current (anodic dissipation). An additional plan was to examine criteria for cathodic protection of steel in concrete as a means of preserving or supplementing the normal protective capacity of concrete.
