Performance Chart Increases Crew Productivity
Productivity management plays an important role in the improvement of quality of service and efficiency in public works. This study describes the water crew performance chart, a simple productivity measurement method that was developed in Winnipeg's Operations Department. Using a simple formula, maintenance crew supervisors calculate the productivity index of their crews and plot the results on the chart daily. Since 1987, when use of the chart began, productivity of crews has increased. Management sees the chart as a way workers can get daily feedback on what they do. Deviation from typical performance is easier to detect, and crew members are motivated to improve their performance.
