Traditional Water Harvesting in Iran
Ancient experiences have revealed that promoting social cooperation, flourishing rural economy, and diminishing unemployment can be achieved through exploitation of small‐scale water resources that could be environmentally suitable for rural and urban development. This chapter outlines the traditional water harvesting systems in one of the ancient, civilized regions in the world, Iran, and the lessons learned from the traditional activities in arid and semiarid areas. Short duration and high intensity are common characteristic of rainfall in arid and semiarid areas of Iran. The chapter aims to introduce and evaluate five different traditional water and rainwater harvesting systems, including Degar, Ab‐Anbar, Ab‐Bandadn, Bandsar, and Khooshab. The limited water availability mainly in arid and semiarid regions in Iran has resulted during the prehistoric years in the construction of several types of water harvesting systems for the collection and storage of rainwater or floodwater.
