Abilene Solves Supply Problem With Microfiltration
This report discusses how the city of Abilene, Texas, augmented its water supply with brackish water from a reservoir that required an advanced treatment process to achieve acceptable finished water total dissolved solids (TDS) levels. The pipeline and pumping station plans also included a new 8 mgd water treatment plant that would be expandable to 24 mgd. Reverse osmosis (RO) was chosen as the treatment process with microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration as the pretreatment process. The city of Abiliene decided that coagulation upstream of MF was the best approach to reducing color and dissolved organics and would improve the RO performance. The article describes how the pilot testing was conducted in four phases, and how the decision of using direct coagulation meant less initial investment and lower labor and maintenance costs down the road.
