A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In this Chapter we examine foundations and their primary aim to direct loads from a structure to the ground. Different types of foundation types are discussed and example calculations for the transfer of loads for a strip and a Trench Fill foundation are provided. The bearing capacity of soils and the bearing pressure exerted by foundations is explained with the help of examples. Eccentricity and loading to foundations is explained and the impact eccentricity can have on the bearing pressure. Climatic and moisture changes in soils are examined and their impact on the structural function of the foundation. Finally the use of underpinning is explained with the aid of an underpinning schedule and diagrams.
