This article addresses the challenge facing water utilities of replacing the departing Baby Boomers. Appropriate training must address the specific requirements of each organization. It is imperative that the people resources of a utility be taken care of so that there is adequate staff to address the many other challenges facing the water industry. Almost every utility has a number of programs that address various aspects of traditional asset management, but not much attention is given to directly target staff issues. The article discusses four activities that help utilities become people‐oriented that include: initiative to provide self‐assessment; business planning/action planning; succession planning; and, leadership training.
