A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Architectural Regeneration Practice in Different Contexts
The role of architects in architectural regeneration is varied and exceeds the realm of a design practitioner. Discussions with five prominent architectural regeneration practitioners provide deeper insights into the various roles that they might undertake in a range of architectural, economic, or social contexts. One crucial insight that emerges concerns the need to recognise the social value of a place and the importance of community engagement. This requires a skill set beyond that employed by architects working in new‐build contexts. Such engagement and the extraordinary professional services associated with this are key to regeneration practitioners' ability to make balanced judgements. Deep immersion through rigorous research, collaboration with other experts, understanding pre‐existing social structures, acknowledging the importance of politics, and maintaining an ethical standpoint are equally crucial; as is respecting the fact that one has a duty to society at large and not just the client or local community.
