NY Consultant Survey Forecasts Industry Growth, Engineer Shortage
This article discusses the results of a survey of member firms conducted by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) that indicate some trends and challenges the engineering industry expects to face in the near future. Finding/retaining qualified personnel, competition from both foreign and government sources, overhead expenses, and insurance costs were some of the critical issues pointed out by survey participants. Trends in the engineering profession included design‐build and other alternative delivery methods, public‐private partnerships, shortages of engineers, and out‐sourcing unskilled tasks to outside consultants or companies located overseas.
