Normal Stress‐Induced Permeability Reduction of a Fracture in a Large Granite Cylinder
Fracture Permeability Alteration with Normal Stress
The paper describes a series of laboratory permeability tests conducted on a large cylinder of Barre Granite measuring 457mm in diameter and 510 mm in height, containing a central cylindrical cavity of diameter 75mm. Radial flow pulse tests were first conducted to determine the permeability characteristics of the intact granite. A fracture was then induced normal to the axis of the cylinder, which also corresponds to the direction of axial compression. The compressive normal stress induces aperture reduction of the fracture, which leads to a reduction in its permeability. Steady state radial flow tests were conducted on the fractured axially stressed sample to determine the variation of fracture permeability with axial normal stress.
