Roman Art and Spectacle
Spectacle culture was a defining feature of the Roman world. This chapter traces the impact that this culture had on Roman art. It explores the reasons why patrons were eager to buy and commission such images, and what they can tell us about Roman culture and society. The chapter offers a brief outline of what such spectacles included. They broadly fall into four groups: gladiatorial contests and wild beast hunts; chariot racing; theatrical performances; and athletic competitions. Images of spectacles and entertainments in art vary from the roughly sketched records of gladiatorial contests that we find on Pompeian walls, to small mementos such as vases, lamps, and terracotta or bronze figurines, to larger representations of various spectacles in the form of paintings, architectural reliefs, and, especially, floor mosaics. The chapter discusses the impact that the games had in a wide range of contexts.
