Spectacle buildings and baths
Buildings conceived specifically for enjoying spectacles or indulge in a communal pastime were quintessential spaces to experience and perpetuate shared cultural values in the classical world. In the Greek and Hellenistic period, sport events in hippodromes and stadia, cultural agonistics in theaters or visits to the public bathhouse were intertwined with religion, rituals, body culture and social relations. These underlying interconnections would also perdure in the Roman period, even if spectacles increasingly celebrated profane events, especially military victories. The architecture of these buildings also underwent more standardization, specialization and upscaling. Furthermore, theaters, circuses, amphitheaters and public baths were erected on prominent locations in the urban fabric and were the buildings of choice for (imperial) munificence. The wide geographical scale of the Empire also entailed more regional variations in architecture, technology and decoration. The popularity of these leisure activities can be deduced from the wide diffusion and long lifespan of these buildings.
