The visual imagination and representation of the ancient city
This chapter discusses the visual imagination and representation of ancient cities, focusing on representations of urban (social) life and on the architectural representation of the city. The chapter discusses what choices are made in visualizing the urban environment – what action contexts and what architectural perspectives feature on which media in which contexts? The chapter focuses on three different visual genres from three different periods. First, it discusses the appearance of urban scenes and urban architecture on Archaic vase painting from Attica, highlighting the impact of early Greek urbanization on the establishment of an “urban” visual culture. The second medium discussed is Roman wall painting of the Late Republican and Early Imperial periods – the Pompeian Second and Third Styles. The sharp difference between these two styles shows how the depiction of urbanity could change radically in a short time. The final section of the chapter discusses the role of urban imagery on Roman coins, which features personifications of both cities and architectural images.
