Managing Projects
The second component of architectural management is managing the individual projects that collectively make up the project portfolio. Managing projects is crucial for the success of the firm and its competiveness. The architectural firm must be prepared to explore and venture into unfamiliar territory, usually the contractor's domain and that of other competitors: from planning the construction site to accommodate equipment, materials, temporary buildings, insurance, facilities management and quality management to core design services. This requires good management and effective strategies, as well as employing a diverse range of professionals, some of whom are experienced in such matters, thus creating a multidisciplinary firm. This chapter presents the basic ‘whats’, ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of the major ten managerial functions related to the second component of architectural management that should be considered by the architectural manager.
