Multi‐storey Building with Concentrically Braced Frames
This chapter illustrates and discusses the design steps and the verifications required by EC8‐1 for a multistorey building equipped with concentrically braced frames (CBFs). It deals with the diagonal X and inverted‐V CBF configurations. The chapter presents the assumptions for structural modelling and the methods of analysis adopted to calculate the seismic induced effects. It discusses the design and verifications for both ultimate limit state and damage limitation limit state. The different seismic behaviour of X‐ and inverted‐V CBFs bracing systems needs to make a distinction in terms of design criteria and calculation models. The crucial issue influencing the structural model is the brace schematization. The design forces acting in the beams of the inverted V‐CBFs are different from obtained by the structural analysis. The basic design assumptions concerning the material properties and the restraints against lateral‐torsional buckling made for beams of X‐CBFs were also adopted for inverted V‐CBFs.
