Behavior of Piles Subject to Cyclic Axial Loading
This chapter deals with the fundamental aspects of the behavior of piles subject to axial cyclic loading. It is essentially based on the results obtained from the programs of in situ pile loading tests conducted throughout the world since the late 1970s, but also makes reference, where necessary, to data obtained on model piles in a laboratory environment, either in a calibration chamber or on a centrifuge. There have been relatively few cyclic loading tests on piles in situ. Such tests are always difficult to carry out, requiring considerable investment in terms both of time and money. The chapter discusses the tensile tests conducted in clays by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) in the 1980s, and the tests (tension and compression) carried out in sands and clays by Imperial College London. It describes the advances made in the context of the SOLCYP project (tension/ compression tests) and summarizes the most significant results (found in Merville clay).
