Benefits of Small‐Watershed Projects to Municipal Water Supplies
Small‐watershed projects under the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act provide a practical mechanism for concerted cooperative action, under local initiative and control, on an integrated water development and management program for each watershed. Through this program, municipalities can provide additional nearby water storage at reasonable cost by including needed facilities in multi‐purpose projects. The combination of watershed treatment and structural measures protects both new and existing water supplies from sedimentation, reduces the cost of filtration, and virtually eliminates flood damages from treated flood plains. Finally, side benefits in new economic activity and increased recreational resources result wherever new water sources are developed.
