Giardiasis is now recognized as the most common identified waterborne intestinal disease in the United States. This article describes the morphology and life cycle of the causative agent, Giardia lamblia, the detection of Giardia and the effectiveness of water treatment processes in removing it, and the epidemiology and clinical aspects of giardiasis.
