Scales, Scaling, and Antiscalants: Fundamentals, Mechanisms, and Properties
The main issues with the oil production wells and industrial circulating flow systems are scale formation and metallic corrosion. The formation of such hard deposits is due to the brine solutions and other operating conditions, thus reducing the effectiveness of the internal diameter of the process flow lines. The existence of salts and acid gases in the inner lines of oil wells expedites electrochemical reactions that lead to corrosion. Scaling and corrosion are interrelated, but their basic phenomena are different. Scaling on the metallic structures can decline or enhance the dissolution rate depending on the physiochemical characteristics of the metal surface at that time. This chapter of the book will focus on scales, scaling processes, antiscalants, fundamentals, and scale growth mechanisms in harsh environments.
