A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The methods currently used to check bolts, and their implicit hypotheses are discussed in depth, and it is shown that they can be put in the general frame of the finite element method. So, a fem formulation useful to model bolt‐layouts, seen as the generalization of the fem modeling of single bolts, is introduced. Special working mode flags assigned to single bolts like shear‐only, no‐shear, are introduced, and the fem formulation generalized so as to keep these working flags into account. Flexibility index is also introduced to tune the stiffness of the layout. Bolts in bearing and preloaded bolts working mode, stiffness and resistance are discussed in depth, and simple models described. The instantaneous center of rotation method for bolt groups under shear and torque is discussed, as well as its use in the context of axially loaded bolt shafts. The bearing surface method to consider contact non linearity is also described.
