A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Introduction: Measuring the Immeasurable, Validating the Ineffable
Data is recognized by many in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry as the elephant in the room. We need to get better at leveraging data to remain competitive, to satisfy our clients' need for evidence, and to help make our claims credible. We need to learn how to work with data to verify our intuition and instinctive hunches, to bridge the gut/data divide, and to remain relevant in a business‐oriented, STEM‐centric world. Learning to work more effectively with data will require the acquisition of some new skills. But even more important, especially at the beginning, is the development of effective mindsets. BIM (building information modeling) is a case in point. Data can be a powerful resource for design and construction professionals, owners, and end users of buildings. Nevertheless, working with data on building projects in the AECO industry is not without its challenges.
