The architect has powers and duties under the JCT Standard Building Contract 2011. Powers are what the architect may do and duties are what must be done. Contrary to popular belief, the architect can only do what the contract allows. Among the things that the contract allocates to the architect are certification at various stages, instruction of variations and other things such as postponement, and inspection as the work proceeds.
