A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Scripting (2006)
In this essay, Malcolm McCullough, the first Autodesk product manager for architecture in the mid 1980s, offers an insider's view of the history of digital design, from early design computing to the recent revival of architectural interest in software scripting and coding. The essay discusses the reasons why architects may need or choose to go back to scripting. As the 1990s wore on, the graphical user interface did so much to make computing accessible to nonspecialists that it became the only form of computer use that most people had ever known. Seemingly on the basis of such advances, programming culture has been rediscovered in architecture. Open‐source software is an interesting case in point, but increasingly even mainstream commercial software allows for so much leeway in user interaction and customisation. McCullough concludes that given the better visual interfaces of today's software, designers may now be coding and scripting without even knowing.
