Construction of the PS34 UHPFRC Bridge
The PS34 bridge is located on A51 motorway near Grenoble, in France. Béton Composite Vicat (BCV®), one of the several ultra high performance reinforced concretes (UHPFRC), is developed by Vicat and the VINCI Group. In 2005, BCV® was used for the first time to construct the PS34 bridge. The construction was carried out by Campenon Bernard Enterprises (a VINCI Group subsidiary) for the AREA Group, with project management assistance from the EGIS Road Group. The BCV® solution was presented as a variation during the bid. The aim of this chapter is to briefly describe this innovative material and its main advantages for bridge construction. In fact, by lightening the structure, BCV® allows some deck supports to be omitted and thus modifies the bridge design and its integration in the concerned environment.
