Urban River Restoration
Anthropic activities, flood control management and engineered channelisation have altered river environments, removing riparian vegetation, hindering watershed processes and ecological integrity. Impervious surfaces have increased within urban catchments, affecting stream connectivity. River restoration includes improvement, mitigation, and reclamation strategies. The contemporary approach to river restoration provides an opportunity to recreate the river's geomorphology, providing resilience to flooding, habitat improvement, pollution control, and aesthetic enhancement. In heavily urbanised areas, the focus is on the reduction of impervious surfaces to control stormwater runoff and renovate natural hydrology, using green and blue approaches to achieve sustainable water management.
