Where Does the Knowledge Reside in Your Utility?
This article discusses the importance of knowledge retention within a utility, and more importantly, determining who has the knowledge within the utility, what knowledge they have, and whether the utility's livelihood is dependent on the retention of that knowledge. The article discusses social network analysis (SNA), a method to capture, transfer, and retain knowledge that is used before selecting your knowledge management (KM) approach. SNA is a diagnostic method used to discover patterns of interaction and knowledge sharing. SNA can validate or disprove assumptions about knowledge retention before a utility invests in a knowledge‐retention initiative. The article discusses SNA methodology, and provides a brief summary of a case study using SNA at Fairfax Water, Fairfax, Virginia.
