Report on Demonstration Plants for Saline‐Water Conversion
The program that Congress has authorized for the Office of Saline Water (OSW) of the U.S. Department of the Interior is primarily a research and development effort whose final objective is the improvement of saline‐water conversion until it becomes an economical source of usable water. The program covers a range of activities from fundamental research to the construction and operation of million‐gallon‐per‐day demonstration plants. This article focuses on the “hardware” phases of the work, but a brief overview of other aspects of the program is provided first. The article briefly discusses four of the demonstration plants that were authorized at Freeport, Texas; San Diego, California; Webster, South Dakota; and, Roswell, New Mexico. The fifth plant, because of its experimental nature, has been redesignated a pilot plant; its construction is nearly complete at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.
