The Water Utility Industry in the United States: Staff Report
This article presents a statement prepared by the American Water Works Association for the Subcommittee on Economic Progress of the Joint Economic Committee of the Congress of the United States on the state of the water utility industry in the U.S. This report predicts that the industry's capital requirements for the next decade (1966‐1975) will total $24 billion, or more than twice the amount spent in the past decade. The necessary annual expenditure to eliminate the backlog of needed construction, meet growth requirements, and replace worn‐out and obsolete plant is expected to range from $2 billion in 1966 to $3 billion in 1975. To support such an expenditure, many water utilities will need to increase their rates. The trend to higher rates has been increasingly evident in recent years.
