Hydraulic Properties of Aggregate‐aggregate Contacts
Soils are often arranged in structures such as aggregates that greatly influence the hydro‐mechanical properties. The understanding of the interaction between structures and the hydro‐mechanical processes is improved by the advances in imaging techniques.
We monitored the water infiltration through series of aggregates by using neutron radiography. We observed that the contacts between aggregates play the key role: they are highly conductive when wet, but severely limit the flow after being drained. The transition between the two states is abrupt. These effects are due to the presence of voids within the contact region, which are easily drained. This draining mechanism is verified by X‐Ray tomography of the contact region. We observed that the solid‐solid contacts are very narrow and sparse. This likely has an impact on the mechanical behaviour.
