A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Architects, working to a budget, are often asked to give an estimate to a client of the cost of the project as designed so that the client can make a firm decision whether or not to proceed. In such circumstances the architect should always refer the client to a quantity surveyor for an accurate estimate. The architect is obviously not offering to carry out the Works for that price. Such estimates by their nature cannot be precise and, therefore, the architect or the quantity surveyor should inform the client of a possible margin of error and other things which need to be considered such as inflation or whether VAT is included or excluded. Estimates produced by an architect or quantity surveyor before the invitation of tenders must be more accurate than an estimate produced at feasibility stage: there is a vastly increased amount of detail available at the later stage.
