Goals for water quality in public supplies, beyond those necessary for health alone, were recently adopted by the profession in the form of AWWA's “Water Quality Goals for Potable Water.” The author, who as chairman of the Water Quality Goals Committee and of its parent AWWA Water Quality Division was thus intimately involved with their development, describes how the goais evolved, why they are practical and desirable, and what future goals might be.
