A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Advanced Composites – Materials with Well‐Defined Reinforcement Architectures
Advanced composites normally refer to lightweight, high‐stiffness, high‐strength materials mainly used in the aircraft and aerospace industries – for which light weight is a very important consideration – that often are required to work in high‐temperature environments. These materials use high‐performance fibers and thermoset resins. Qualitative features of different types of composites are discussed. Information on matrix resins, reinforcing fibers, and reinforcing tapes and fabrics is provided. Several types of fiber geometries are used to obtain lightweight, high‐performance composites. Notable are pultruded, filament‐wound, laminated, knitted‐fiber, liquid‐transfer molded composites. The chapter describes three important applications of fiber‐reinforced rubber composites: tires, conveyor belts, and pressure hoses. It provides a "unified" approach to the different types of composites, and linked them through chopped‐fiber filled and pure resin parts as integral parts of plastics engineering.
