Training the Next Generation
This article discusses water utility workforce succession and knowledge retention issues related to the increase in requirements for environmental and water conservation programs. The article discusses the conspicuous lack of formalized training and competency assessment available to currently practicing or potential water conservation professionals. The article highlights water conservation training by AWWA's California‐Nevada (CA‐NV) Section, and the Lane Community College (LCC) Water Conservation Technician Program, and mentions a conservation program offered by AWWA's Pacific Northwest Section Water Conservation Committee (PNWS WCC) that is regionally specific to Oregon, Washington and Idaho. This program was designed to be modular and to allow for the removal of geographically‐specific information and the inclusion of modules from other geographic areas.
