River Ecology and Urban Pollution
The exploitation of river water by man, and the associated impact on ecology, can be placed into five broad categories: supply, disposal of waste, transport, leisure, and physical alteration. Monitoring the ecology of the river is able to overcome all these issues and is used throughout the world to assess the quality of our rivers and stream. The most commonly utilised group of organisms used to assess water quality are the macroinvertebrates. Eutrophication of rivers is caused by increased nutrient loading. Aquatic macrophytes (plants) and phytobenthos are used to measure the impact of eutrophication in rivers. Within the urban environment, physical modification is a major factor that impacts the river ecology. This can be in the form of weirs or modification of the banks in an attempt to prevent erosion, culverting, and the building of flood defences.
