A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Polymer foams are frequently used in energy absorption and cushioning applications. Their applicable fields mainly include sports equipment, safety products, and packaging materials. Polymer foams offer several advantages over metallic or inorganic foams such as greater design flexibility, easy processability, and recyclability, and offer a wide range of compressive strengths, from highly elastic to semirigid and rigid. In this chapter, the energy‐absorbing mechanism, classification of energy‐absorbing polymer foams, characterization methods, fabrication approaches, and advanced applications of polymer foam‐based energy‐absorbing materials are covered, to provide basic information on the subject.
