Planning and Construction of An Ellipsoidal Dome
Description of 140 ft diam ellipsoidal dome containing 1,500 cu yd of concrete. Construction planning to meet schedule. Timber forms are supported on 44 trusses with two conditions of support. Temporary roof is without center support, and spanning across perimeter wall. Concrete form with center support, and sliding on wall. Adjustable pipe jacks maintain a construction tolerance of ± 1/2 in. from theoretical. Analysis of rotational stability of compression ring. Truss erection, and concrete pouring sequence. Form stripping, and truss dismantling sequences. Removal of forms and trusses, through opening in dome, for subsequent re-use. Steel plug is bolted into position. Two of the four committed domes are under construction.
