Planning and construction of ellipsoidal dome
Timber forms used in construction of 140 ft diam ellipsoidal dome containing 1500 cu yd of concrete were supported on 44 trusses with two conditions of support; temporary roof was without center support and spanning across perimeter wall; adjustable pipe jacks maintained construction tolerance of plus or minus 1/2 in. from theoretical; analysis of rotational stability of compression ring; removal of forms and trusses was performed through opening in dome, for subsequent reuse.
