Transforming the Port of Beirut : Exploring stakeholder views after the port explosion in 2020 ; Återuppbyggnaden av Beiruts hamn : En studie om aktörernas perspektiv efter explosionen 2020
This study delves into the challenges faced by global ports and the ongoing discoursesurrounding the future role of the Port of Beirut post-explosion. The key question is whetherthe port should maintain its independent status or undergo integration with adjacent areas, emphasizing the incorporation of public spaces. This integration aims to bridge the gapbetween the port and the city, fostering accessibility, economic growth, and social interaction. The study highlights the potential for social cohesion, especially given Beirut's shortage ofpublic spaces. The qualitative research emphasizes positive transformation possibilitiesthrough port regeneration, the creation of public spaces, and the importance of addressingmilitary presence. Urban planners, stakeholders, and experts strongly support portregeneration, recognizing the existing disconnect as a hindrance to the port's full potential.Embracing this change offers Beirut the opportunity to reclaim its waterfront, redefine itsidentity, and enhance the well-being of its residents.
