Hamilton by-pass motorway -- Stage I
Features of route, design and reconstruction of Glasgow-Carlisle trunk road A.74, major commercial road link between industrial centers of Scotland and England; route passes over old mines; roadways are dual, 24 ft wide (Stage II will be 36 ft wide) flanked by 1-ft marginal strips, 10-ft hard shoulders and 10-ft verges; base construction for Stage I included composite base of 7 in. lean concrete topped by 3 in. dense bitumen macadam; for surfacing, usual 4 in. of hot rolled asphalt was adopted -- 2 1/2 in. base course, 1 1/2 in. wearing course with stone contents of 65% and 30% respectively and precoated chippings; ramps are heated by installations of 508 kva total loading.
