Special features of 14 mi long roadway through semirural, semiurban area of Lanarkshire, central Scotland; interchanges are discussed; special site and hydraulic model investigations were used to evaluate problems of bad ground conditions along route, presence of old underground mineral workings, and risk of serious flooding from River Clyde; road profile was adopted which led to gross cut-fill imbalance and massive importation of selected fill materials.
