Underground command center presents problems
Problems encountered in designing and constructing underground North American Air Defense Command Operations Center to provide protection against all effects of close nuclear weapon detonation; several 3-story steel frame buildings were built in excavated chambers; geological conditions required realignment of chambers from original design, and in one area concrete lining was required to reinforce immediately surrounding rock formation; buildings are shock mounted by system utilizing springs to attenuate both vertical and horizontal accelerations; buildings are enclosed by 3/8 in. steel plate to protect electronic equipment from electromagnetic fields creased by nuclear explosions.
