Improving effectiveness of backfill
Results of studies of methods of increasing grain friction properties and cohesive properties of hydraulic backfill indicate that backfills in general, are placed underground in moderately loose to loose state; laboratory and underground compaction tests using standard concrete vibrator show that initial in-place denseness (mass unit weight) of cohesionless fill material tested can be significantly increased by vibratory compaction; coarse and/or uniform fill materials form looser fills, are more susceptible to piping, and have less strength than well-graded material.
