Foundation cutoff wall -- Allegheny reservoir dam
During construction of Allegheny Dam it was determined that due to possible movement of fines within pervious foundation, impervious cutoff was necessary; thin concrete wall, approximately 1100 ft long, was used, extending from original ground surface to foundation rock, maximum depth of 185 ft; under-seepage problems at dam are described and various remedial measures considered are presented; measures adopted and construction details for installation of 2.5 ft thick concrete cutoff wall are given; piezometer data are reported indicating validity of solution, and conclusions as to use of cutoff wall are presented.
