Difficult foundation problems connected with soil stabilization
Basic methods used in difficult soil conditions are described and illustrated by examples such as replacement of poor soil by means of excavating or dredging, compaction of too loose, noncohesive soil, consolidation or strengthening of soft strata embedded in load-bearing sand subsoil by means of preloading with sand, lowering of water table or installation of supporting structures (piles, caissons, etc), and, finally, consolidation of soft, cohesive strata by means of drainage and superposed sand strata.
