The invention belongs to the technical field of road sweeping devices, and particularly relates to an automatic obstacle avoidance system for a sweeping disc of a road sweeper and an obstacle avoidance method based on the obstacle avoidance system. A distance sensor and the sweeping disc are correspondingly arranged, and the distance sensor is arranged in the upper part of the sweeping disc and isfixedly connected to a mounting frame; the distance sensor is used for detecting the distance between the corresponidng sweeping disc and an obstacle; a controller is electrically connected with an electromagnetic reversing valve, and the controller controls the electromagnetic reversing valve to achieve telescopic control over telescopic driving; a telescopic drive is correspondingly provided with two limit switches, one limit switch is used as a telescopic limit switch, and the other limit switch is used as a telescopic limit switch; the distance sensor is connected with an input terminal of the controller through a wire; and the electromagnetic reversing valve is connected with an output terminal of the controller. Position state information of the sweeping disc is automatically detected, obstacles in the left side and the right side are detected, and therefore automatic obstacle avoidance of the sweeping disc is achieved, and the defect that obstacle avoidance operation is conducted manually traditionally is overcome.
