The invention belongs to the technical field of smelting slag resource utilization and harmless treatment, and discloses a copper smelting slag-based building ceramsite and a preparation method thereof. The copper smelting slag-based building ceramsite is prepared from the following raw materials by mass percentage: 55-85% of copper smelting slag and 15-45% of cobalt smelting slag. The copper smelting slag is prepared from the following components in percentage by weight: 25 to 35 percent of SiO2, 27 to 45 percent of Fe, 1 to 6 percent of CaO and 3 to 10 percent of Al2O3. The cobalt smelting slag is prepared from the following components in percentage by weight: 45 to 65 percent of SiO2, 2 to 6 percent of Fe, 4 to 12 percent of CaO and 5 to 9 percent of Al2O3. According to the method, respective characteristics of the two smelting slags are fully utilized, and resource utilization of the two smelting slags is synchronously completed in preparation of the ceramsite. The ceramsite is lowin raw material cost.
