The invention relates to the technical field of dampers, in particular to a viscous damper with variable additional stiffness. A spring set arranged in an additional rigidity cavity adopts a staged working mode to realize that additional rigidity is not provided under wind vibration and small earthquakes, so that the structural rigidity is relatively soft, the relatively large displacement amount is obtained while the earthquake reaction force is reduced, the hysteresis area of the damper is increased, and a higher additional damping ratio is obtained; by means of the principle that additional damping reinforces the structure, the additional damping ratio is increased, the steel consumption of a main body structure is reduced, the manufacturing cost is reduced, and meanwhile the higher performance target is obtained; and under medium earthquakes, major earthquakes and rare earthquakes, additional rigidity is additionally provided for the main body structure while additional damping is provided, the interlayer displacement angle of the main body structure under the action of the medium earthquakes, the major earthquakes and the rare earthquakes is controlled, and the main body structure is protected against damage from the two aspects of improving the strength and the rigidity.
